NYMC Bursary 2010 Application Form National Youth Music Camps Bursaries
Guidance Notes

The National Youth Music Camps are open to all levels of musical experience and no specific formal grade, examination or audition required. Any young person with an interest and commitment to music may apply. Although camp fees are kept as low as possible, we recognise that some young people with an interest and commitment to music may not be able to afford to apply to camps.

We have a limited number of bursaries to support applications from young people for whom personal and family circumstances mean they would otherwise be unable to attend camps. Anyone wishing to apply for a bursary must apply for camps in the normal way, including £25 deposit, and in addition complete the separate bursary application form.

Please note that we have a limited number of bursaries so all applications may not be successful. We do not wish to be unnecessarily intrusive but bursaries are awarded based on need, so we will have to ask for information regarding family income and expenditure (including tax credits and other benefits), and any supporting documents you are able to supply will help us reach a quicker and fairer decision. All information received will be treated in strictest confidence.

General Guidelines

• Bursaries will normally be awarded at 50% of camp fees, however consideration of additional contributions may be given in exceptional circumstances.
• All successful bursary applicants will still be required to pay the initial £25 deposit, whatever the level of bursary awarded.
• The bursary application form must be completed and returned with appropriate supporting documents by the general camps application deadline.
• Total family income and expenditure is the main criteria on which bursaries are decided.
• As a guideline, total family incomes of less than £16,000 are more likely to be awarded bursaries, whereas total family incomes over £25,000 are unlikely to be awarded bursaries.
• Applicants in receipt of free school meals are likely to be awarded bursaries
• Family income levels and supporting documents must be for the current camp year applied for and documentation issued in the 6 months prior to bursary application.
• Any change in circumstances which could affect eligibility for a bursary, even after it has been agreed, must be reported to NYMC immediately.
• Preference may be given to first time applicants for the main bursary scheme. Other bursary funds may be available to enable repeat attendance in future years, provided the applicant’s circumstances are still such that they are still eligible and a bursary application is completed in the normal way.
• The decision of NYMC administration on bursaries awarded is final and there is no right of appeal.

References

A reference will be required from a class teacher, head teacher, instrument teacher or other professional adult who knows the young person in an educational context. The referee is asked to confirm some information on the applicant and comment on their interest in and commitment to music and the potential benefits of the camps to them.

The Allan Ganley Bursary Fund

This special fund supports bursaries for places at the National Youth Music Camps for either young drummers or young players of any instrument with an interest in jazz. It was set up in memory of the jazz drummer Allan Ganley by his family. Allan Ganley had a long association with The Stables and with the Stables founders Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine.

Young musicians who can show an interest in and commitment to ether drumming or to jazz can apply using the normal Stables Bursary form, but please include some additional details about your drumming or jazz activity.
