Haydn Quartet in D Op.20 No.4, Korngold Quartet No.3 in D, Schubert Quartet in D minor D.810 Death and the Maiden
This quartet is well-known for its affinity with Haydn’s music, and the Op.20 Sun Quartets were a milestone in the composer’s career, at which he reached full maturity in string quartet writing. The Doric has recorded Korngold’s third string quartet to rave reviews, so is no stranger to this piece. Schubert’s masterpiece Death and the Maiden features a heart-rending slow movement based on his song of the same name. It is a piece of great intensity and is one of the best-loved string quartets of all time.
“Haydn and the Doric are a perfect match. This is an ensemble … that plays Haydn’s music with spirit, illuminating its blend of wit and sophistication, grace and vivacity, cunning and seemingly effortless spontaneity.” The Sunday Telegraph
