For the first time in the UK, Beth Nielsen Chapman is offering one of her much sought-after songwriting workshops. Focusing on both creativity and process, songwriters of all genres will benefit from her unique and inspiring teaching style.
She’s a renowned and in-demand songwriting teacher and creative coach who teaches worldwide as well as at schools such as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and Berklee School of Music.
Beth Nielsen Chapman is considered by many to be one of the pre-eminent singer/songwriters of her generation. Beth has penned numerous hits and written songs for a wide selection of artists including, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Neil Diamond, Trisha Yearwood, Roberta Flack, Martina McBride, Michael McDonald, Olivia Newton-John, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and jazz legend Andy Bey.
Beth’s songs have topped the charts, on television and in movie soundtracks, including ER, Dawson's Creek, Providence, Felicity “The Prince of Egypt, “Message In A Bottle”, “The Rookie”, “Where The Heart Is” and “Practical Magic” and the mega-hit "This Kiss”, ASCAP'S 1999 Song Of The Year, sung by Faith Hill garnered her a Grammy nomination.
Beth Nielsen Chapman's approach to writing is all about freeing the creative spirit. This workshop is about writing from the creative flow and learning how to trust and be open to "flowing" and "not knowing" as you embark on the journey of creative expression. Students learn how to disengage from "thinking" during the beginning of the creative process, increasing the chances of inspired originality. The second phase of the writing process is then explored through the process of re-writing, analyzing and editing, whereby the brain is more called into action. Through teaching many techniques as well as critiquing, Beth illustrates and outlines how to dance between spontaneity and structure, lifting off and staying in one's center as the writing of a song unfolds; and in the process, Beth also teaches a powerful technique for singing with the least effort from bell-tone of the your speaking voice.
As part of the day, participants will get feedback on their songs in a Master Class format and advice on how to take it to the next level. Please bring lyric sheets for any song that would be considered for critique, as this will greatly enhance the clarity of the feedback.
