Yuriy Galkin is a brilliant acoustic and electric bass player with a great sound, technique and time feeling. He has gained recognition for his extraordinary compositional skills, winning the 2007 UK Composition Competition (led by Tim Garland) and the prestigious Dankworth Composition Prize for his tune Evolvent in 2010. In 2008, Yuriy formed the Yuriy Galkin Nonet, performing his original compositions. The line-up includes the cream of the jazz crop - Yuriy Galkin (acoustic and electric bass), Freddie Gavita (trumpet, flugelhorn), Steve Fishwick (trumpet, flugelhorn), Jon Stokes (trombone), Zhenya Strigalev (alto sax), George Crowley (tenor sax), Tamar Osborn (baritone and soprano saxes, bass clarinet), John Turville (piano), Dave Hamblett (drums). In early 2012 the Yuriy Galkin Nonet releases its debut album Nine Of A Kind and joins us touring this new work.
